I’m currently making some major decisions (more on this soon) about where exactly I’m going in life and what I want to achieve. This year has been really busy workwise and trying to balance that with having a personal life can start to take its toll. I know that I’m preaching to the choir here too, as most of us have a job and a side hustle to keep ourselves going.
As much as it’s good to push yourself there’s always going to be times when your to-do list will get to you. That’s why it’s so important to keep some tips up your sleeve that you can turn to when it all gets a bit much. I’ve popped my five favourites below that really help me to feel better and that get me back to my best asap.
1. Make A Plan
If you’re overwhelmed because you have a million things to do then getting organised could be the answer. Sometimes just mapping out your to-do list and seeing everything on paper is enough to calm your anxiety and make you feel better. Often, seeing it written down will make you realise you have a lot less to do than you think. That, and the fact that it’s insanely satisfying to cross something off!
Ok, so probably not the first thing you want to hear when you’re down but this is the best thing for making you feel better. Exercise encourages your body to release endorphins and serotonin which help to relieve stress and balance your mood. Besides the obvious, it’s also a great way to take your mind off whatever is happening. I’ve been doing 10-20 minute HIIT workouts on YouTube that are my favourite for a burst of positivity.
3. Call Your Friends
Obviously, if you need someone to talk to then you should call your friends but sometimes just going out and having fun can be a welcome distraction. When everything feels like it’s piling up or if you’re getting creatively stuck then taking a break could be exactly what you need. Your friends are also the best source of honest advice as they’re the ones that know you the best. Along with this, it’s good to take the time to go to things that will inspire you, like a film or an event or even something out of your comfort zone.
4. Switch Off
I’ve had such a busy year workwise that I feel like I’m constantly attached to my phone but as hypocritical as it is for me to say this, it’s good to switch it off. I actually left it at home one day this week and it was THE nicest day. I felt so much more present and way less anxious so I’m thinking of doing this more often. It’s also really nice to have some peace and not be so contactable…
5. Call It A Day
Sometimes you’re overwhelmed because things just aren’t working and whether it’s a job, a friendship or a relationship you need to be honest. Not only with yourself but with everyone else involved. Dragging something out for fear of offending other people is so much worse than just being honest in the first place. Life is also way too short to keep accepting things that aren’t making you happy, trust me. If it’s causing you that much stress then you’re better off without it!
